Queering the Map: ON_SITE

The first residency focused on Queering The Map (QTM), a community generated digital counter-mapping project that aims to archive fleeting moments of queer existence and resistance in relation to physical space.

Curated by Lucas LaRochelle, Queering The Map: ON_SITE was a public program that included a series of workshops, performances, a publication, and an exhibition that translated the virtual world of Queering The Map into the physical location of 4th Space (Concordia University), running from July 16 to 26, 2019. In an effort to encourage a collaborative, messy, and contradictory curatorial vision, visitors were invited to contribute to and alter the exhibition by interacting with stories from the platform that resonated with them and asked: what new relationships are possible within and through the digital archive of Queering The Map, when its contents leap from the screen and can be touched and reconfigured? What might it feel like to move through a world animated by queer pasts and presents and what futurities might emerge from this kind of knowledge? How can the digital community generated by the project be activated in real time?

La première résidence a mis de l’avant Queering The Map (QTM), un projet digital de contre-cartographie généré collectivement et alimenté par la communauté, dont l’objectif est d’archiver des moments éphémères de l’existence et de la résistance queer, en relation avec l’espace physique. 

Créée par Lucas LaRochelle, Queering The Map: ON_SITE était une programmation publique incluant une série d’ateliers, des performances, une publication et une exposition qui transcrit en un lieu physique, le 4th Space à l’Université Concordia, le monde virtuel de Queering The Map, entre le 16 et 26 juillet 2019. Dans l’idée d’encourager une vision commissariale collaborative, contradictoire et  désordonnée, les visiteur.euse.s étaient invité.e.s à modifier et à contribuer à l’exposition en interagissant avec les histoires qui résonnent en elleux. Quelles nouvelles relations sont possibles dans et à travers l’archive digitale de Queering The Map, quand ses contenus sortent de l’écran et qu’ils peuvent être touchés et reconfigurés? Quelle serait la sensation de parcourir un monde imaginé selon des passés et des présents queer, et quels avenirs émergeraient de cette expérience? Comment la communauté digitale créée par ce projet peut-elle être mobilisée en temps réel?

Queering the Map: ON_SITE was activated by a series of workshops and an evening of performances that deepened and complicated the format of the digital platform and the themes it explores. The programming topics included; digital self-defense for marginalized communities (Liane Décary-Chen), counter-cartography through beadwork (rudi aker), mapping desire through movement (Jose Richard Aviles), exploring love as technology (Neema Githere), a drag queen story hour (Barbada), a latin partner dance class (Jose Richard Aviles), self-reflection through hip hop (Figgy Baby), recontextualizing personal histories through affirmative autoethnography (nènè myriam konaté), prototyping to materialize possible futurities (Lucas LaRochelle), and strategies for deepening interspecies kinship (Jacqueline Beaumont).

Une série d’ateliers et de performances a animé « Queering The Map : ON_SITE », enrichissant et complexifiant le format de sa plateforme numérique et des thèmes qu’elle explore. La programmation a abordé les thèmes suivants : l’autodéfense en ligne pour les communautés marginalisées (Liane Décary-Chen), la contre-cartographie par le perlage (rudi aker), cartographier le désir à travers le mouvement (Jose Richard Aviles), la lecture d’histoires par une drag-queen (Barbada), une leçon de danse latine (Jose Richard Aviles), l’autoréflexion à travers le hip hop (Figgy Baby), la recontextualisation d’histoires personnelles à l’aide de l’auto-ethnographie affirmative (nènè myriam konaté), le prototypage d’espaces queer (Lucas LaRochelle), et les stratégies pour explorer la parenté inter-espèce (Jacqueline Beaumont).
